I believe winners are made, not born. Each one of us has winning characteristics and the ability to succeed; we just need to put a few key things together to achieve greatness. So, what’s the formula for creating a successful athlete?

Successful athletes all have one thing in common…

Hard work. Sacrifice. Dedication. Talent. And commitment. Whether you’re a high school volleyball player, or an NFL line backer, there are certain characteristics all athletes have in common. Successful athletes everywhere share many similar traits, but there are a few qualities an athlete must possess in order to rise to the top: Humility, Confidence, Tenacity, Respect, and Accountability. These qualities reach far beyond an athlete’s sport and stretch into life.

Consider this: What behaviors do successful athletes exhibit when they are at their best? What thoughts do [they] have when they are on top? And what emotions do these athletes experience when they are competing at the highest levels?

You don’t have to be a professional athlete or an Olympic champion to be a successful athlete. You do, however, have to be committed to being the best you can be. Do everything you can to improve yourself – train hard, practice, refine your skills, clean up your diet, rest and recover, and become mentally strong. Essentially, do everything you can to maximize the raw material you possess.

You are an athlete. Be your own example. Challenge yourself to be the best you can be.
